Super Awesome FREE My Neighbour Totoro crochet pattern!

totoro-samen-web1

Recently I made a very cute Totoro as a maternity present for a friend of mine. I went a bit crochet-crazy, so Totoro became huge (really, like 12″ tall) and I also made his little blue friend Chu Totoro!

totoro-web4

Today I want to share this free Totoro pattern with you! The pattern is very new, so it hasn’t been tested yet. But feel free of course to share your thoughts in the comments! Also, if you decide to make this Totoro yourself, I’d love to see a photo of it so I can share it on my Facebook and on this blog. 🙂

TOTORO! YEAH!

I used a 3.0mm crochet hook and sports weight yarn, from the Annell Malmedy brand.
I used 2 1/2 skeins (50 grams/125 meters/150yd each) of grey yarn, 3/4th skein of beige/white yarn, 1/2th skein of blue yarn, 1/5th skein of green yarn. I also used about 3 meters/3 1/3yd of black yarn.

Next to that I needed a LOT of fiberfill, about 400 grams. I also used a tapestry needle to sew everything together, and to do the very basic embroidery on the blue Chu Totoro.

About the patterns in general: they’re worked in spirals. The terms I use are American. You need to be able to crochet the following things: magic ring, chain stitches, slip stitches, single crochets, increases and decreases.

Skill level: advanced beginner.

totoro-web2

Here’s a list of with abbreviations all the things you need to know:

  • MR = magic ring
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • inc1sc = increase 1 single crochet (= crochet 2 in total)
  • inc2sc = increase 2 single crochet (= crochet 3 in total)
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together/decrease 1
  • sc3tog = single crochet 3 together/decrease 2
  • Repeat all round = Repeat the described section until the end of the round
  • Repeat 3x(…) = repeat the part between the (brackets) 3 times

Hi! Thank you so much for posting the pattern, it looks amazing! I look forward to making it for my daughter, who is probably the number 1 grown-up Totoro fan. 🙂 I was wondering if you think it would work with a DK cotton yarn. I’m having trouble finding sport weight yarn in the right shades (and also I’ve never worked with very thin yarn, so I’m a bit hesitant…)

    • Joyce says:

Hi Arietta, I think it can also work with a DK yarn (I’d then go for a 4mm crochet hook tho), but please keep in mind that Totoro will become very tall! 🙂 I think he’ll become something like 50cm/20″ in height when make with DK yarn.
